FAQ
Good questions.
Scanning, the Lock Screen, haptics and audio, privacy, sharing and pricing: the short answers.
The basics
How is this faster than ChatGPT?
A chatbot answers one thing you paste at a time and loses your worksheet’s structure. Skimr reads the whole sheet in one scan, solves every problem and sub-part in order, shows the work the way you’d write it, draws graphs, and puts the answers on your Lock Screen. No retyping, no cropping, no chat history to scroll through.
What can I scan with?
Your iPhone camera: snap each page, or record and move slowly over the sheet, and Skimr keeps the sharpest frame of each page. The camera starts at 0.5× (on iPhones with an Ultra Wide camera), with a lens button for 1×, and it never uses the flash.
You can also pick photos from your library, type a question, or pair a Bluetooth pen scanner or camera.
How much fits in one scan?
One worksheet: up to 30 pages or 100 problems. Add pages any time while the scan lasts; they join the same scan, and pages already in it are recognized and never solved twice. Skimr keeps one scan at a time, and it clears itself 4 hours after it starts.
What do I need?
An iPhone with iOS 18 or later. There’s no account: no sign-up, no email, no profile.
How accurate is it?
It was 98% accurate in our own practice-worksheet tests. Still, AI can be wrong, so check the work before you rely on an answer.
Lock Screen, haptics & audio
How do the Lock Screen answers work?
Each scan becomes a Live Activity on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. ‹ › pages through the problems without unlocking, wrapping around at the end, and long work continues over several pages. Tapping × twice clears the scan; the last cleared scan can be recovered with Face ID or your passcode until its 4 hours are up.
What is discreet mode?
Tap the eye on the Lock Screen and the answers turn into an everyday text, from Mom unless you pick someone else: Dad, Grandma, Sister, Brother, Coach or any name you choose. Nothing about the scan shows. Tap Reply to bring the answers back.
How do the haptics work?
A multiple-choice answer buzzes its letter when it comes up: A once, B twice, C three times, up to F.
4 quick buzzes before the letter mean you’re back at problem 1, a problem was skipped, or a new part of the sheet has started. It works in the app, on the Lock Screen arrows and with the Action button.
How does the headphone button work?
With Audio on and AirPods or Bluetooth headphones connected, the play button moves through your answers:
- Press once: next answer
- Press twice: previous answer
- Press three times: back to problem 1
It works with the screen off, so you don’t need to unlock. On AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro you can slow down how fast the presses need to be in Settings → Accessibility → AirPods → Press Speed.
Will the answers ever play out loud?
No. You hear each problem and its answer only in AirPods or Bluetooth headphones. Skimr never plays them from the iPhone speaker.
Can I use the Action button?
Yes. On iPhones with an Action button, go to Settings → Action Button → Shortcut → Skimr → Next Answer. Each press steps to the next answer.
Privacy & sharing
Is my schoolwork stored somewhere?
Your scan stays on your iPhone and clears itself 4 hours after it starts. To solve it, the clearest image of each page and its text are sent to Google’s Gemini through the Skimr server, and only after you allow it. There’s no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and your data is never sold.
Do my scans go to Photos?
No. Scans never touch your camera roll: pages stay inside Skimr until they clear. If you pick a photo from your library, only that photo is shared with Skimr, so Skimr doesn’t need access to your Photos.
How does sharing work?
Tap Share and send the link by AirDrop or Messages, even before you scan. Whoever opens it gets the answers, and new ones as they’re solved, always in problem order. Each link works on one phone, the first one that opens it, so tap Share again for each friend. The answers are end-to-end encrypted with a key that only lives in the link.
Is sharing anonymous?
Yes. Your friend never sees your name, and never your pages: the images don’t save on their phone, only the answers and the work. They can view the scan, not change it or pass it on.
Can I get a cleared scan back?
The last cleared scan can be recovered with Face ID or your passcode until its 4 hours are up, or deleted for good. If you’d rather not keep a way back, turn recovery off in Settings.
Can I lock Skimr?
Yes. Turn on a PIN, and Face ID, to keep Skimr private. The PIN is stored only as a hash on your iPhone.
Pricing & subscriptions
Not happy with a scan?
Tell us what went wrong in a short report. We read every one and reply by email, and if a scan didn't do its job, we credit you a free scan code to redeem in Skimr → Membership → Redeem a Code. Leave a report
How much does Skimr cost?
One scan is $5. The Semester is $25 every 3 months and practically unlimited: up to 1,500 solved problems per 3-month period (fair use, about 60 practice worksheets). See pricing
How does the Semester renew, and how do I cancel?
It’s an auto-renewing subscription that renews every 3 months. Cancel anytime.
Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it’s cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel it anytime in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
What does the Semester cover?
Up to 1,500 solved problems in each 3-month period, about 60 practice worksheets. Scans shared with you never count. If you reach the limit, the scan you’re on still finishes, and new scans are One scan purchases until the semester renews.
Is there a free trial?
There’s no free trial yet, but keep your eyes peeled: we’ll post codes on our social media and here on the site for a free scan, bonuses and discounts. Redeem them in Skimr → Menu → Membership → Redeem a Code.
Until then, opening the camera, taking photos or pairing a pen never costs anything, and a scan only counts once the AI first answers it.
Homework & integrity
Made for homework, practice and studying
Skimr is for working through homework, practice sheets and practice exams, and learning their solutions. Don’t use it where devices aren’t allowed, like during a test or a quiz, and follow your school’s academic-integrity policy. AI can be wrong, so check the work.
Can I use it during a test?
No. Skimr is for homework, practice and studying. Using it where devices aren’t allowed breaks school rules, so please don’t.
